CHARACTER INFO

Character: Link
Canon: Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom // canon point: after awakening the Sages but before finishing the Dragon Tears quest // Songerein CRAU
Age: 21 (technically 121)

Background Information: Here's the wiki link!

CRAU info: Link will be bringing with him memories of his first time in Songerein, before he was updated to TOTK canon. During this time, Link made huge strides forward in social development; for the first time in his life, he was able to truly connect with people he came to care about, making real friends and learning, a little bit, how to express himself and process the traumas he's been through. The major thread connecting his CRAU development is using his past mistakes to make decisions about his future that are better for him.

He was also able to let loose a bit, so to speak, and allow his own true personality to shine through (unfortunately). Link, in canon, is defined by a few things: his position as a hero and a Champion; his connection to Zelda; his history of defeat and triumph; the duties he takes upon himself. In service of these elements, Link tends to quiet his own personality and stick to being the "strong silent" pillar, to assuage peoples' fears and give them hope. Losing his memories in BOTW allowed a little more of his own personality to shine through: silly, weird, and genuinely longing for connection; however, this was always tempered a bit by the quest he still had to complete. His time in Songerein allowed him to just live a bit, and helped him to break out of the box he had built for himself, navigating the balance between his inner self and the promises he made to the people around him in canon. (Essentially: he was able to be "the gremlin" as well as "the hero.")

Personality:

1) Tell us about who your character is and what someone’s first impression would be upon meeting them.
First impressions of Link can vary widely based on who he's meeting, as well as when, where, and how they're meeting him. In battle, for example, Link is a fierce, sharply-trained warrior who will employ any tactic, within reason, to win a fight—even if it just means chucking a sword at an enemy. While journeying or adventuring, Link can be seen as chaotic, a real "fuck around and find out" force of nature who will steal, demand, cause property damage, or run around in his underwear, all means in service of whatever end he's trying to reach. In most social settings, Link is a bit of a wallflower, content to quietly watch without conversing. During a game or some other fun activity, he can be unhinged and competitive in a fun way. (Dumb boy squad forever.)

As for who he is, Link is all of those things. He's experienced tragedy and triumph, he's done a whole lot of stupid shit, and the quests he undertakes tend to be kind of crazy. Tears of the Kingdom, especially, sees him lose his arm and get a new one (from a…ghost…it's fine, he wasn't using it) with wacky powers that allow him to be an unhinged feral gremlin while also saving the world. The word to use for Link is multifaceted. He contains multitudes. Some of those multitudes are frightening.

2) What is a driving force your character has? What goals do they have, what motivates them, etc?
In spite of his tendency to be an absolute menace, Link's driving force in life is to do good. His utmost desire is for his country to be at peace, for his people to be safe and happy. He's determined to do the right thing*, simply for the sake of it being right.
*chaotic good alignment; he'll break rules (and pots) left and right so that good wins out in the end.

At his current canon point, Link's main goal is find Princess Zelda. This will eventually include defeat the Demon King, as well, but those two things go together. However, at any given time, Link has smaller goals as well, things that help other people out, more or less: clear out a monster encampment here, find a missing horse there, things like that.

As for motivation, Link has several. One, as I said before, is the determination to do good. At heart, Link is a hero—that's why the Master Sword picked him in the first place. However, Link is also motivated by adventure, maybe a little bit of adrenaline-seeking, and curiosity. He's the sort of character who will poke a mystery just to see what it'll do, and he'll climb a mountain just to see what's there. In a world where the Calamity never happened, where he never drew the Master Sword, Link might have spent his life adventuring—without the added baggage of saving the world.

3) What are their flaws as a character? What is something they've messed up, or have done that they regret?
Link's defining flaw is emotional reticence. In order to inspire confidence from the people of Hyrule, Link shut himself away, emotionally speaking, taking on the demeanor of a strong, silent hero. He kept many of his thoughts and feelings entirely to himself for a very long time. He thought this made him brave. Knowing the Champions was beginning to teach him that there are other ways to be brave—but he never had the chance to act on any of that. It's one of his big regrets, that he was never as close to the Champions as he could have been, due to his misguided refusal to open up to them. He has been able to progress with this flaw, in some ways, allowing himself to loosen up and be more open, but it has been a struggle, and probably always will be. It will always be a challenge for him to face.

Independence is another trait that you could list here as a flaw. It's inextricably linked (hah) to his desire to be seen as strong, to be able to bring ease and confidence to the people around him. Link often takes on tasks by himself, and makes a stand alone even when others do not. Learning to rely on the Champions, even after their deaths, was a struggle—so, too, is it difficult to rely on the Sages. Link has managed this flaw better than the first, but he is still, in many ways, a very solitary creature.

He has other flaws that you could list as vices, really: curiosity and a hint of chaos, which make him prone to doing extremely strange things. A complete and utter lack of shame: this has served him well, when he needed to steal and sneak in order to survive, but those tendencies linger within him still. Lack of decorum, too. It's not as if Link doesn't know protocols—he was trained as a royal knight. But he pays very little attention to them in his post-Calamity life.

In terms of "something they've messed up," this version of Link is sort of defined by his failures. Both BOTW and TOTK see Link starting out from nothing: low stamina, low health, no Master Sword. In both storylines, he's been beaten within an inch of his life, stripped of his strength, and has to work his way back to being a hero from the ground up. In TOTK particularly he views this defeat as a failing: he tried to reach Zelda before she fell and disappeared. He failed. Link has many regrets, and this is the biggest of all—his inability to reach her when she needed him most.

4) Optional: What is something unique and interesting about them, or what is a fun little tidbit that sets them apart from the crowd?
Oh gosh there are so many things to pick for this. Did you know that the new voice notes make it canon that Link eats rocks? But actually, I think the one I'll go with is that Link is kind of a horse girl. He has a lot of animal handling experience, and tried to teach Zelda about it as well—not just how to ride a horse, but how to treat them. How to understand them. (Was he secretly trying to teach her about patience and tolerance? Maybe. He would never say.)

Abilities & Inventory:
Survival skills and fighting. Link is an accomplished Knight and adept with a sword. He can also use other weapons, such as bows, axes, spears, and…well. sticks. He's also a practiced survivalist, and feels comfortable in the outdoors either as an adventurer or as a fighter.

Zonai abilities. Link's right arm has been replaced by the arm of an ancient Zonai king, Rauru. This new arm allows him to use strange new powers:
Ultrahand, which allows him to grab objects nearby and move them around.
Fuse, which…does exactly what it says on the tin, fuses two objects together.
Ascend allows him to phase through a roof that's not too far overhead, provided there is something on top of it.
Recall is a time-stopping ability that allows Link to stop time on a particular object, and rewind it a short bit.

These abilities come with their own nerfs, generally: he can only use them in close proximity to an object. They don't work on creatures or people. Only one can be used at a time. The objects must be reasonably portable and not too big: he wouldn't be able to Ultrahand-lift a full ship, for example. I usually use these abilities for "rule of funny" purposes and as a solve for small everyday issues, but if you want more nerfs on these abilities, I can do that!

As a note, Link is no longer able to access the Champions' abilities from BOTW.

Inventory.
Hylian tunic outfit: tunic, trousers, boots, and cloak
Hylian shield
Bow and arrows
Paraglider
Link would normally carry the Purah Pad with him, but if Zelda has it in-game, I'd be fine for it to not be on his person.
Several rusted-through weapons; with low durability, these will break easily
Several meal ingredients: apples, berries, some wheat, mushrooms, etc
Probably a butterfly in his pocket somewhere. Or a lizard. And absolutely some monster teeth.

Notably, Link currently does not have the Master Sword or the Champion's Leathers.

ARMADA SELECTION

I've chosen Corsairs for Link, which is an armada selection that speaks mostly to his development since before the start of BOTW. Before the Calamity, Link was a Knight of Hyrule, and dedicated his life to following the rules. He never really minded that life so much, but losing his memories (and really the dissolution of the Knights, since the Calamity all but wiped them out) really changed the way he navigates rules and order. At heart, Link is a character I would define as "chaotic good"—he seeks to serve the greater good, to do what's right, but he does so within his own parameters, and often those parameters require a lot of bending the rules. Maybe even breaking rules. Maybe even blowing things up! Property destruction tends to be frowned upon, even in service of doing good, so Corsairs is a better match for Link. As a note, I also think it would be interesting to explore the idea of Link and Zelda being in opposite factions. Even if the factions don't always necessarily clash, it could create an interesting tension if someone is forced to choose between their faction and their duty, and that would be something Link would have to take under consideration.

That said, if it was necessary for game balance, he would be an interesting fit in Paladins because it would be challenging for him. Their emphasis on order directly contradicts the way he's lived his life since the start of BOTW, and while he would fit well with their ideas about exploration, he would struggle with their adherence to rules and norms.
